My entry for the Dark Shadows contest: A portrait of the vampire Barnabas as portrayed by Johnny Depp in the upcoming Tim Burton film. Done in a somewhat neoclassical style mixed with a heavy dose of Rembrandt. Didn't have a lot of time on this one and the style is a completely new experiment, but I really had some fun with it.

I've come back to this for a closer look. It certainly has the look of late 18th c., early 19th c. portraiture. I was trying to remember where I had seen something like this before. It reminds me of Delacroix's portrait of Hamlet in its style and tone. It's dark, mysterious, and brooding--attributes of Barnabas Collins in any incarnation. Depp's face and hair are perfect. His cravat stands out against the receding shadows of his vest and cloak. The ring and cane are well-detailed. There is a suitable dimness to the fireplace, its mantle, and the window across from it. These are hallmarks of portrait painting in that era. Brilliant!
